From Crisis to Confidence – The Journey of Aysha

In the remote village of Tribhuwana in Gilaula block of Shravasti, the life of Aaysha was once defined by hardship, uncertainty, and silent struggle. Born into a traditional low-income Muslim family, she was married at the age of 15 and soon became responsible for raising her family. With two daughters and a son to care for, life became increasingly difficult as her husband, who is physically challenged, was unable to earn a stable income. The family owned no agricultural land and survived through irregular labor and small support from relatives.

For years, Aaysha lived with limited opportunities and little hope for economic independence. Like many women in marginalized rural communities, she remained confined within social boundaries, with minimal exposure outside her household responsibilities. Speaking in public, managing finances, or engaging with institutions seemed unimaginable to her.

A turning point came in 2022 when Grameen Development Services (GDS) organized a farmers’ meeting in her village to promote women-led rural entrepreneurship through Community Resource Persons (CRPs) and Agriculture Entrepreneurs (AEs). Aaysha attended the meeting along with other villagers. During the discussion, several community members encouraged her to take up the role of a Community Resource Person.

At first, Aaysha hesitated. She doubted her abilities due to her limited education and lack of confidence. She had never addressed a gathering before and possessed only basic knowledge of agriculture. However, the GDS team recognized her determination and potential. Through continuous motivation, mentoring, and encouragement, they persuaded her to step forward and participate in the initiative.

What began as a small step gradually transformed into a life-changing journey.

With sustained support from GDS, Aaysha participated in a series of capacity-building trainings, exposure visits, and technical sessions on improved agricultural practices, entrepreneurship, and farmer advisory services. Over time, she developed strong communication skills, practical agricultural knowledge, and the confidence to work directly with farming communities.

Today, Aaysha is a respected Agriculture Entrepreneur in her village. She regularly conducts farmer meetings, provides agriculture-related advisory services, and supplies quality agricultural inputs to local farmers. Through these services, she now earns an annual income of nearly Rs. 80,000–90,000 — a remarkable achievement for someone who once struggled to meet even basic household needs.

Aaysha is also associated with Lehra Agro Producer Company Limited, a Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) promoted by GDS. The FPO supports her in accessing quality agricultural inputs and facilitates aggregation and marketing of farm produce, strengthening her role as a local rural entrepreneur.

The impact of this transformation extends far beyond income generation. It has restored dignity, confidence, and hope within her family. Most importantly, it has enabled her to invest in her children’s education and future.

Sharing her emotions, Aaysha says:

“Aaj mai apne bachcho ko padha pa rahi hu ijjat se kamake. Agar mai aaj AE nahi hoti to shayad mai apni badi beti ko 12th nahi padha pati. Mere pas itna nahi tha ki mai apne pariwar ka palan-poshan thik se kar saku. Mai LAPCL aur GDS ka aajivan aabhari rahungi ki inhone  meri zindagi hi badal di.”

(“Today I am able to educate my children with dignity through my own earnings. If I had not become an Agriculture Entrepreneur, perhaps I would not have been able to educate my eldest daughter up to Class 12. Earlier, I did not even have enough resources to properly support my family. I will always remain grateful to LAPCL  and GDS for transforming my life completely.”)

Aaysha’s story is a powerful example of how community-based livelihood interventions, when combined with continuous mentoring and institutional support, can create lasting social and economic change. Her journey from vulnerability to self-reliance reflects the transformative power of women’s empowerment, rural entrepreneurship, and inclusive development.

Today, Aaysha is not only supporting her family with dignity but also inspiring many other rural women to believe in their own potential and step forward as leaders of change in their communities.
